On Friday night, Jonathan Owens drove around Chicago, exploring the city for the first time in his life. He was in awe of its skyscrapers and bright lights all along the river.
Growing up in St. Louis, playing college football at Missouri Western State University and spending most of his professional career in Houston and Green Bay, Owens had "never been in a downtown like [Chicago] before." His only stops in Chicago were to play against the Bears — trips that only consisted of traveling from the airport to the hotel to Soldier Field.
"It was sensory overload," Owens said. "I'm driving and every two buildings I'm like, 'babe look at this, look at this.' It was a really good time and we're excited."
While Owens was in uncharted territory, he had an expert Chicago tourist with him leading the way — his wife, Simone Biles.
Biles, who grew up in Texas, remembers falling in love with Chicago while frequently traveling to the city for gymnastics meets in high school.
"I'm excited about Chicago because every year we used to come compete here, so it's taking me back to when I was younger," Biles told ChicagoBears.com. "We were always in the city. Me and my mom are big shoppers, so we would always go shop, find all the new stores and go to American Girl. So seeing and reminiscing from when I was younger was really fun."
Owens and Biles spent the weekend together in Chicago to begin acclimating to their new home after Owens signed a two-year contract with the Bears in March.
Along with exploring downtown and discovering new food spots for date nights, Owens and Biles were further welcomed to Chicago when they attended a White Sox game Saturday at Guaranteed Rate Field. Owens was invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch, allowing him to fulfill a lifelong dream.
"I got to throw out the first pitch and that was always something I wanted to do," Owens said. "Being from St Louis, I thought it would be for the Cardinals. But given this opportunity, I couldn't turn it down."
Biles anticipated Owens' throw would look similar to rapper 50 Cent's infamous wild first pitch at a Mets game in 2014, but she was pleasantly surprised by his accuracy.
"He kept talking about the side arm," Biles said. "I really thought he was going to throw a '50 Cent.' I was so excited for that. Well, it was actually a 10, so it irritated me how good it was. It was really good. I'm proud of him."
Since they've been together, Owens and Biles have supported each other's professional sports careers. This spring and summer, Owens plans to attend every major competition Biles will compete in ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, adding: "I'm gonna be in there cheering like it's a football game."
In between her own training and competitions, Biles is still focused on showing up for Owens and celebrating special moments with him, like Saturday's first pitch.
"It has meant the world to be able to support him," Biles said. "There's not a lot of time I get to do that because our seasons clash at one point and then it's [his season] and then it's [mine]. So it's actually exciting whenever I get to come out and support [him] because these are memories that you won't get to do forever. So every time I get to support him, any which way, I'm here."
While Biles already feels comfortable in Chicago, she has appreciated the outpouring of support since Owens signed with the Bears. She initially showed her love for the city with a series of tweets after Owens made the move during free agency.

Ken Holtzman, a former left-handed pitcher who threw two no-hitters with the Cubs and won three straight World Series championships with the Athletics from 1972-74, died Sunday at the age of 78. Holtzman was battling heart issues and was hospitalized for three weeks before his death, his brother, Bob, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Born in St. Louis on Nov. 3, 1945, Holtzman was selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the first MLB Draft in 1965 out of the University of Illinois. Upon arriving in the Majors, he drew comparisons to Sandy Koufax, another hard-throwing Jewish left-hander. Holtzman is the winningest Jewish pitcher in Major League history with 174 victories. Koufax won 165 games in his career.
Holtzman spent his first seven seasons with the Cubs and threw no-hitters in 1969 and 1971. His no-hitter against the Braves at Wrigley Field on Aug. 19, 1969, remains the last no-no to be thrown without a strikeout in the big leagues.
After posting a 3.79 ERA over 220 2/3 innings as a rookie with the Cubs in 1966, Holtzman enlisted in the National Guard in 1967 and was only available to pitch on weekends that year. He ended up making 12 starts for Chicago and went 9-0 with a 2.53 ERA.
Holtzman reached new heights after being traded to the A’s for former No. 1 overall Draft pick Rick Monday in 1971, becoming a key part of Oakland’s rotation during the team’s run of three consecutive World Series titles. Holtzman posted a 1.97 ERA over 59 1/3 innings during the postseason in those three years and earned the win in Game 7 of the 1973 Fall Classic against the Mets, holding New York to one run over 5 1/3 innings.
The southpaw earned the only two All-Star selections of his career in his first two seasons with the A’s. Over four seasons with the club, he posted a 2.92 ERA with 530 K’s in 1,084 1/3 innings.
Holtzman’s tenure with Oakland came to an end in April 1976, when the team sent him to the Orioles (along with future Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson). He was traded again later that year from the O’s to the Yankees. Holtzman was dealt from the Yankees to the Cubs in 1978, giving him a chance to finish his career where it started.
Over 15 MLB seasons for the Cubs, A’s, Orioles and Yankees, Holtzman went 174-150 with a 3.49 ERA and 1,601 strikeouts in 2,867 1/3 innings.

Bedard vs. Eichel
It’s been a while since these two have squared off, but it’ll be fun to watch the No. 1 pick for the Blackhawks in the 2023 NHL Draft go against Eichel, the No. 2 selection by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2015 NHL Draft. Eichel, who missed 19 games because of a knee injury from Jan. 12 to March 3, has 66 points (30 goals, 36 assists) in 61 games, second on the Golden Knights behind Jonathan Marchessault with 69 points (42 goals, 27 assists) in 80 games. Bedard had an assist in each of Chicago’s games against Vegas in October.

Blackhawks vs. Kings
It won’t be as anticipated as his NHL debut, but it’ll be exciting to see how Bedard finishes his rookie season when the Blackhawks play the Kings. Los Angeles (43-26-11) enters the week still looking to solidify its position in the Pacific Division. The Kings are third, one point ahead of the Golden Knights, who hold the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference. Bedard has one assist in two games against the Kings this season.
Bedard is in the 87th percentile in 70-80 MPH shots, and the 97th percentile in shots on goal from mid-range (95).

WHAT HE’S DONE
Bedard had an assist in three games this past week. He leads the Blackhawks and NHL rookies with 60 points (22 goals, 38 assists) in 66 games. He’s the seventh rookie in Blackhawks history with at least 60 points in a season, joining Steve Larmer (90 in 1982-83), Artemi Panarin (77 in 2015-16), Denis Savard (75 in 1980-81), Patrick Kane (72 in 2007-08), Jeremy Roenick (66 in 1989-90) and Darryl Sutter (62 in 1980-81). New Jersey defenseman Luke Hughes is second among rookies with 47 points (nine goals, 38 assists) in 81 games, and Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber is third with 45 points (seven goals, 38 assists) in 80 games.
WHAT’S AHEAD THIS WEEK
The Blackhawks wrap up their season with a two-game road trip. They’ll play the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday (10 p.m. ET; HULU, ESPN+, SN360, TVAS), then close out their season against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday (10:30 p.m. ET; BSW, NBCSCH, SN360).
MOST INTRIGUING MATCHUP
Bedard vs. Eichel
It’s been a while since these two have squared off, but it’ll be fun to watch the No. 1 pick for the Blackhawks in the 2023 NHL Draft go against Eichel, the No. 2 selection by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2015 NHL Draft. Eichel, who missed 19 games because of a knee injury from Jan. 12 to March 3, has 66 points (30 goals, 36 assists) in 61 games, second on the Golden Knights behind Jonathan Marchessault with 69 points (42 goals, 27 assists) in 80 games. Bedard had an assist in each of Chicago’s games against Vegas in October.
MOST ANTICIPATED GAME
Blackhawks vs. Kings
It won’t be as anticipated as his NHL debut, but it’ll be exciting to see how Bedard finishes his rookie season when the Blackhawks play the Kings. Los Angeles (43-26-11) enters the week still looking to solidify its position in the Pacific Division. The Kings are third, one point ahead of the Golden Knights, who hold the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference. Bedard has one assist in two games against the Kings this season.
Bedard is in the 87th percentile in 70-80 MPH shots, and the 97th percentile in shots on goal from mid-range (95).
