The Wisconsin judge who was arrested by the FBI on Friday and accused of interfering in the arrest of an undocumented immigrant has a decadeslong history of advocating for the poor and vulnerable.

Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan faces two charges for obstruction and concealing the individual from arrest after federal authorities accused her of directing a defendant – who was attending a hearing in her courtroom last Friday and facing domestic-battery charges – to leave through a non-public door in order to avoid immigration officers who were waiting outside to arrest him.

The man, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican national, was ordered to be removed from the United States in 2013, and authorities learned he was back in the United States without authorization after his arrest in the local domestic-violence case. He was captured outside the courthouse by immigration authorities after a short chase.

Dugan’s attorneys said in a brief statement that the judge “has committed herself to the rule of law and the principles of due process for her entire career as a lawyer and a judge” and “will defend herself vigorously, and looks forward to being exonerated.”

Dugan was first elected to a six-year term on the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in 2016 and reelected in 2022. She has a decadeslong history of working with aid organizations and was an active member or leader of several Milwaukee-area legal groups and charities. Much of her experience appears to focus on advocacy for the poor.

Prior to her election, Dugan practiced civil law for six years, according to her LinkedIn. She previously served as executive director of Catholic Charities of Southeastern Wisconsin and was a past president of the Milwaukee Bar Association. She also worked as an adjunct assistant professor at Marquette University’s law school. Her LinkedIn describes her as having been a “frequent speaker on ethics and poverty law topics.”

In 2003, she was named by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Milwaukee to a board that assessed complaints of sexual abuse against members of clergy, according to media reports at the time.

She wrote often about civil rights and the law as a contributor to the Milwaukee Independent. Her campaign’s Facebook page shows her participating in a variety of local community events – marching in parades, planting American flags at a veterans’ cemetery and judging poetry competitions

In a 2021 article she wrote for the state bar’s publication, she described a “passion project” of having her picture taken in front of every county courthouse in Wisconsin.

Dugan received her bachelor’s degree and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree from Boston College.

One of Milwaukee's most popular Sunday morning spots was named Yelp's best brunch restaurant in Wisconsin for 2025.

Uncle Wolfie's Breakfast Tavern earned a place on the online rating and review platform's 2025 list of the Best Brunch Spots in Each State, which was updated last week.

Yelp compiled the list by identifying businesses in the breakfast and brunch categories and then ranking those businesses based on the volume and ratings of reviews given by Yelp Elite Squad members ― local users who have been selected for their well-written reviews, high-quality photos and helpful behavior on the platform.

At 234 E. Vine St. in Milwaukee's Brewers Hill neighborhood, Uncle Wolfie's offers a lineup of savory, sweet and even spicy dishes during breakfast and lunch hours. Breakfast offerings include cornmeal Johnny Cakes, breakfast poutine, a chicken biscuit, a breakfast burrito and plenty of side options like bacon, biscuits, tavern potatoes, fries and French toast.

Lunch dishes include a variety of salads, wraps, and hot sandwiches like a patty melt and burgers. The restaurant also has an extensive cocktail and beer list, featuring brunch staples like a Bloody Mary, an Irish Coffee and a Beermosa.

Owners Wolfgang Schaefer and Whitney McAllister opened Uncle Wolfie's in December 2018, taking over the long-vacant bar space under their apartment. Schaefer told the Journal Sentinel he wanted the menu to be approachable, diner-like and frequently changing.

While the restaurant has focused on the hours before 3 p.m. for most of its existence, it's forayed into the world of dinner in multiple ways in recent years. Uncle Wolfie's transforms into Nite Wolf on Friday and Saturday nights, a ramen restaurant serving cocktails and other beverages.

In November 2023, Schaefer and McAllister opened a downtown Uncle Wolfie's location at 600 N. Broadway. After a few iterations, the Broadway spot became Uncle Wolfie's Downtown, which serves brunch Thursdays through Mondays and dinner on the weekends.

Uncle Wolfie's Breakfast Tavern on Vine Street is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays through Mondays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, according to the restaurant's website. How gas prices have changed in Milwaukee in the last week

Gas prices have gone up by about 9 cents per gallon since this time last month but are still down by nearly 50 cents compared to this time last year. The national average fuel price is about $3.17, with Abilene, Texas, seeing the cheapest metro-area prices at $2.54 and Salinas, California, with the most expensive at $5.17.

After issuing multiple pauses on tariffs against Canadian and Mexican imports since taking office, President Trump in early April announced a sweeping 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the U.S., with many countries facing even steeper duties, though oil and gas imports are exempted from new tariffs. On April 9, the White House announced a three-month pause on all "reciprocal" tariffs (except against China), but the baseline 10% tariffs will remain in place.

Jolted by the impact of the tariff announcement, the stock market plummeted on April 3, with U.S. oil prices dropping 7%. The double-whammy of lower prices and higher costs for crucial materials like steel pipes may have a major impact on domestic oil and gas production. Meanwhile, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries announced this month that it would increase production to help stabilize the market.

Expecting market volatility, GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan thinks it is possible that gas prices have already reached their peak in 2025, which typically happens around mid-April each year.

"After oil's sharp drop over the last couple of weeks—driven by concerns over the impact of U.S. tariffs and OPEC+ restoring production faster than expected—gasoline prices have posted a notable weekly decline, with nearly every state seeing prices fall," De Haan said in a statement this week. "While I do expect gas prices to continue trending lower, any abrupt change in the current tariff situation could eventually bring the decline to a halt."
