KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Texans cornerback Kris Boyd nearly shoved Houston special teams coach Frank Ross to the ground after the opening kickoff of their divisional playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.
The Texans had kicked off and Chiefs returner Nikko Remigio had broken through their coverage, hitting the open field and racing toward the end zone. Boyd caught him and stripped the ball loose, ran toward Houston’s sideline and celebrated the fumble by ripping off his helmet and sending it skittering toward the bench.
Only problem: Kansas City recovered the fumble.
“I got the ball out,” Boyd said after the game. “And as I’m getting up, I look at the screen, I see nothing but white (Houston’s colors) and they’re all pointing that way,” Boyd said, thinking the Texans recovered. “So I was like, ‘Oh yeah, we got the ball, too. Turnover.’ And I was just turnt.”
But then one of the Texans told Boyd it wasn’t good — because there was a penalty flag on the field and the Chiefs still had the ball.
Boyd proceeded to shove Ross on the sideline and ultimately was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for taking off his helmet.

“I was just too excited, did something that I shouldn’t have done. Learning from it,” Boyd said. “Keep my helmet on.”
Boyd said pushing a coach is “not in my character” and he wouldn’t disrespect anyone.
“I love Frank,” he said. “I’m a God-fearing man. I respect everybody in that building.”
Boyd said he apologized to “everybody,” including Ross, for letting his emotions get the better of him.
“He told me, ‘Hey, listen, don’t worry about that,’” Boyd said. “We had a whole ballgame to play, but I was just trying to get my point across. Like I said, I’m not that type of person.”
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans didn’t see Boyd shove Ross on the sideline.
“What I saw is we can’t come out on the first play and throw our helmet,” Ryans said. “That’s not what we teach. That’s not what we’re about at all.”

There's some serious star power in Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs-Texans playoff game Saturday, with Caitlin Clark and Taylor Swift seen sitting together in a suite.
Clark's a lifelong Chiefs fan who was recently on the "New Heights" podcast, hosted by Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce, who retired from the NFL after last season.
Clark was seen celebrating in a suite with Swift — hugging and cheering after catches by Travis Kelce, including a fourth-quarter touchdown that gave Kansas City a 20-12 lead.
The Chiefs went on to win, 23-14.
On the Kelce brothers' podcast she spoke about her support for the Chiefs.
"I had family in Kansas City, and I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, which is only three hours from Kansas City," Clark said. "That's just the closest NFL team."
Clark, who grew up in West Des Moines, said she would go to one Chiefs game a year because her cousin lived in Kansas City.
"My brother loved Tony Gonzalez," she said. "We would, like, go to one game a year growing up because my cousin was down in Kansas City."
Swift began her high-profile romance with Kelce last season, when he invited the "Anti-Hero" singer to watch him play in a September matchup with the Bears. Since then, the two have spent plenty of time together, often with cameras following them.
She has been spending more time in Kansas City lately after wrapping up her record-setting Eras Tour on Dec. 8 in Canada.
The Chiefs had a first-round bye in the playoffs after going 15-2 in the regular season and earning the No. 1 seed. They are trying to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls; Swift was on hand for the most recent one in Las Vegas, racing back from her concert in Tokyo the same weekend to make it in time for kickoff.

Critical Materials Crossroads, on behalf of UMKC, advances as finalist for National Science Foundation award of up to $160 million over decade
In May 2023, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, on behalf of the University of Missouri System, received a $1 million 24-month federal cooperative agreement to lead the development of an energy materials ecosystem in Kansas City.
The $999,480 award from the National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engines Program is funded through the CHIPS and Science Act, signed into law in 2022, to significantly boost U.S. production of microchips and tackle supply chain vulnerabilities to revitalize Americas scientific research and technological leadership.
Since that award, the UMKC Critical Materials Crossroads has been building momentum on the development of an energy materials campus that would produce midstream materials for energy generation, storage and distribution in the Kansas City area to promote technical and economic development and prosperity in the Kansas City region. As part of this project, the Critical Materials Crossroads will create a highly trained workforce skilled in advanced manufacturing and automation.
In October 2024, the Critical Materials Crossroads team officially advanced as a finalist for the National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engines Type 2 award. The full proposal is due in February 2025 and could lead to $160 million in additional funding over the next 10 years to help launch new businesses and educate the future critical-materials workforce.
Economic Impact Analysis for Critical Materials Crossroads Energy Materials Ecosystem (PDF)
Governor Mike Parson congratulated the four Missouri higher education institutions, including UMKC, for advancing to the next stage. The other three advancing institutions include the Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Missouri–St. Louis and Washington University in St. Louis.
"We are excited that out of 71 teams advancing in this national competition, Missouri is home to four of them," Parson said. "Missouri's technology sector is budding and growing, and these teams will help us continue the exceptional work we have done to develop our workforce, strengthen our infrastructure and emerge as a technological leader. We congratulate our higher education institutions, as well as their application partners, on the incredible work that has gotten them to this point, and we trust that Missouri innovation will win the day, potentially securing these National Science Foundation Engine designations for our state."
This collective will leverage partnerships with universities, businesses, industry, nonprofits and state, local and federal government institutions in Kansas and Missouri to drive the growth needed for this new hub. To do this, manufacturers will be equipped with the necessary workforce, materials and innovation to develop domestically sustainable and profitable critical goods.
Goals for the collective include:
“UMKC is proud to take the lead on behalf of the University of Missouri System and its four universities on this exciting effort to create a new industrial base in our region focused on computer chips and other microelectronics,” said UMKC Chancellor Mauli Agrawal. “The potential for business formation and job creation is extraordinary, and we’ll be working with partners throughout Missouri and Kansas to make it happen.”
Anthony Caruso, Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Curators' Distinguished Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering, is the principal investigator for the grant.
“Our goal is to realize a self-sustaining Kansas-Missouri microelectronics industrial base that will become profitable without the need for government subsidy,” Caruso said. “That requires reinventing manufacturing practices. To meet this grand challenge, the team will focus on synergistic and symbiotic partnerships that leverage the unique natural resources, manufacturing and transportation capacity of Missouri and Kansas. The ultimate goal is to develop marked improvements in regional educational attainment and economic growth.”
Energy materials underpin many aspects of day-to-day life, including medical equipment, cars, industrial machinery and consumer electronics. U.S. manufacturing has declined significantly since the early 1990s, leaving the country reliant on imported critical materials which many see as a threat to both economic growth and national security. The Critical Materials Crossroads aims to reshore these manufacturing jobs and provide a sustainable pathway to develop these critical goods and materials domestically, lowering our reliance on foreign entities of concern and increasing national and economic security.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs fans learned today that Saturday’s Chiefs Divisional Playoff game will feature a flyover from four US Army CH-47 Chinook helicopters.
Bravo Company 7-158th GSAB out of Gardner, Kansas will fly the helicopters for the flyover.
These flyovers aren’t out of the ordinary for Chiefs Kingdom. With several unique air bases like Whiteman Air Force Base surrounding the Kansas City metro, the Chiefs are treated to a wider range of flyovers than some other teams.

2023 Wild Card
No flyover happened before the 2023 Wild Card game against the Miami Dolphins due to weather. That game was the coldest game in Chiefs history and the fourth coldest in NFL history.
The Chiefs advanced to the Divisional Round with a 26-7 win over Miami.
2022 AFC Championship
The Chiefs were headed to the Super Bowl after beating the Bengals in the 2022 AFC Championship game. The flyover was conducted by four T-38s from Whiteman Air Force Base.
2022 Divisional Round
In the 2022 Divisional Round, the Chiefs beat the Jacksonville Jaguars after four F-16 fighter jets from the 138th Fighter Wing of the Oklahoma Air National Guard screamed over Arrowhead Stadium
2021 AFC Championship
The Chiefs would not be heading back to the Super Bowl after the 2021 season with a loss to the Bengals at Arrowhead.
However, the game still featured an electric flyover from four “KC Hawgs” A-10 Thunderbolt ll’s during Ashanti’s national anthem performance.
2021 Divisional Round
The 2021 Divisional Round matchup, which has come to be known as the “13 seconds game” and one of the greatest NFL Playoff games of all time, saw the 509th B-2 bombers flying over Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs would beat the Bills in overtime to advance to another AFC Championship in this game.
2021 Wild Card
The Chiefs played the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2021 Wild Card Round. They beat the Steelers 42-21, but there was no flyover before kickoff.
2020 AFC Championship
The Chiefs faced the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead in the 2021 AFC Championship game. The Chiefs jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the second quarter and never looked back, earning a Super Bowl appearance with a 38-24 win over Josh Allen and the Bills.
That game also featured a flyover from aircraft located at the previously mentioned Whiteman Air Force Base. Four “KC Hawgs” A-10 Thunderbolt ll’s of the 442d Fighter Wing flew over Arrowhead to start the game.

2020 Divisional Round
The first playoff game of the 2020 season at Arrowhead was rung in by another B-2 bomber from Whiteman Air Force Base flying over. The Chiefs beat the Cleveland Browns in this game.
2019 AFC Championship
Per tradition, Air Force B-2 stealth bombers flew over Arrowhead before the Chiefs 2019 AFC Championship win against the Tennessee Titans.
The aircraft were operated by the 509th and 131st Bomb Wings.
2019 Divisional Round
The Chiefs faced the same opponent they’ll be playing on Saturday back in the 2019 Divisional Round. After falling behind 0-24 in the first half, Mahomes and the Chiefs rallied back to win 51-31.
That Divisional thriller featured a unique flyover as well; four F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets flew over Arrowhead just ahead of kickoff.
2018 AFC Championship
Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes first met in the playoffs in the AFC Championship game after the 2018 season.
The game was a thriller, with Brady and the Pats taking down the Chiefs in overtime. The flyover didn’t disappoint either. Three F-16 Fighting Falcons fighter jets flew over Arrowhead towards the end of the national anthem.

Ahead of the Chiefs 2018 Divisional Round game with the Indianapolis Colts, the 509th Wing conducted a flyover in B2 Stealth Bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A trio of Missouri Congressmen have a message for the US Postal Service. Deliver the mail on time or “Pony Up.”
A recent audit found Kansas City had some of the slowest and worst mail service in the nation. That included mail sitting at Kansas City postal stations for as many as 13 days without being delivered.
The audit also cited late and canceled trips and low compliance with scanning requirements contributing to inaccurate data.
Congressman Mark Alford, R-4, said Thursday his office received a complaint from a constituent waiting to receive a check mailed 10 days ago to pay for his cancer medication. He also cited a hatchery that sends chicks in the mail, that loses $40,000 a month because they die before they are delivered.
“There’s supposed to be a 6-day guarantee but it’s not happening and there’s no accountability,” Rep. Alford said.
Alford joins other Missouri Congressmen, Emanuel Cleaver, D-4 and Sam Graves, R-6, to introduce bipartisan legislation that calls on the post office to pony up for customer’s late fees.
“We need bipartisan action to ensure these costs are not levied on hardworking Americans who have no ability to prevent these delays, and I’m proud to introduce the Pony Up Act with Reps. Graves and Alford to provide relief,” Rep. Cleaver said.
“It would require the postal service to reimburse people if there is a late charge. What’s happening now is people are sending in their checks to the mortgage company, people still do that. If those checks don’t get there, they are charged a late fee sometimes it adversely affects their credit. That’s wrong.”
“That makes sense to me. If I get the bill late and I therefore pay the bill late, that shouldn’t be on me to have to foot that bill,” customer Abby Meyer said.
According to the mail audit, most of the issues stem from employee shortages, like people not showing up to work and general oversight from supervisors and managers. Alford said he’d like to see the Postmaster General go before a house oversight committee. Louis DeJoy did appear before the Senate to discuss his Delivering for America Plan.
“I have my own people, 640,000 people, that need to learn to operate like FedEx and UPS that’s the only way we survive,” DeJoy responded to a question from Sen. Roger Marshall, R- KS.
According to the legislation reissued Thursday customers who ended up with late fees could either file for reimbursement online or by filling out a form at the post office.
