Series History
Friday will mark the first time in almost 55 years that UConn and Miami (FL) play each other, with the last matchup between these teams dating back to 1970, when the Huskies traveled south for a two-game set. The Hurricanes won the opener in a 2-1 final March 27, 1970 and secured a 4-0 decision the day after.
What to Watch For
UConn is still searching for its footing after a grueling 2-7 start to begin its season, but it does have a smidge of momentum on its side. Despite losing the first two games of the Dodger Classic last weekend, the Huskies rallied to triumph over No. 14 Vanderbilt in a 6-2 win. The offense supplied seven hits to generate its six runs and the pitching mystified the Commodore lineup. Thomas Ellisen put together his best performance on the young season, throwing six innings without surrendering an earned run. He’s the only starter to complete the fifth inning this season.
Despite the much-needed length from Ellisen, as well as scoreless outings from Sam Hutchinson, Jude Abbadessa and Brady Afthim on Sunday, pitching inconsistency has continued to be an issue for UConn.
Ian Cooke has not looked much like the Big East preseason pitcher of the year the conference had predicted him to be, and his first three starts have been a mixture of puzzling and unnerving. Through 10 innings pitched, he has surrendered 23 hits and 15 earned runs, good for an ERA approaching 14.00. His left-handed counterpart Gabe Van Emon has struggled similarly and even had his turn in the rotation skipped last weekend, with head coach Jim Penders opting to send out Oliver Pudvar instead to start against USC, saving Van Emon to use out of the bullpen. The Endicott transfer appeared against UCLA game to relieve Cooke, giving up an unearned run, two hits and two walks in 1 2⁄3 innings pitched.
The bottom line is if the Huskies want to win games, the pitching needs to be able to hold its own. It looked sharp against a nationally-recognized Vanderbilt lineup but cannot afford to come into Coral Gables flat.
Miami (FL) is 11-3 on the season and a perfect 9-0 at home. Its offense produces all throughout the lineup, with five of the team’s nine starters hitting at least .300 on the year and all nine reaching base at a .350 clip or higher. The Hurricanes have outscored opponents 123-40 in 14 games for an average of 8.79 runs per game.
As fiery as their offense grades out, their defense is just as sharp. Miami’s defense averages 0.64 errors per game (nine errors, 14 games) compared to UConn’s 1.11 (10 errors, nine games). A team-wide .980 fielding percentage is slightly higher than the Huskies’ .967 percent. In addition, the Hurricanes are aggressive on the base paths, having been caught stealing just once in 2025 with a 21-22 steals-to-attempts ratio. Miami pitchers have succeeded in limiting the stolen base themselves, holding opponents at just 10 bags swiped on the year.
The Husky offense will again be tested this weekend, set to face three formidable right-handers in Nick Robert, Griffin Hugus and Brian Walters, all of whom have made three starts so far this season. Hugus, the projected Saturday starter, has pitched the best of the three. His 30 strikeouts over 17 innings ties him for sixth-most in the nation and his 0.71 WHIP is the 30th-best of any starter in the nation. All three limit walks, surrendering a combined 15 in 47 2⁄3 innings.
The Husky offense made great strides in scoring early last weekend, and will look to do the same this weekend. Prior to the Dodger Classic, UConn had not scored in either of the first or second innings of any game. Against Vanderbilt and UCLA, the Huskies scored a run in the first in each game and they also put up two runs in the second inning against USC. Ensuring they put pressure on early is key to knocking Miami’s best arms out of the game.
Penders is still figuring out which lineup stacks up the best, having started 11 position players in at least four of the Huskies’ nine games. This weekend likely won’t be much different, with three weeks until conference play to figure out who will crack the starting nine.
