Shoppers in downtown Colorado Springs, Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs won’t have to worry about dipping into their holiday cash to pay for parking on select days this season.
Officials in Colorado Springs and Manitou said their special parking promotions are intended to draw visitors to support local businesses during the biggest shopping period of the year.
The day after holiday sales kick off on Black Friday, downtown Colorado Springs hosts Small Business Saturday all day on Nov. 30 in one square mile of downtown. Several shops and restaurants will offer sales and specials that day.
Additionally, all Colorado Springs city-owned parking garages, lots and meters will be free Thursday to Saturday downtown and in Old Colorado City.
“We want to encourage residents and visitors alike to visit downtown Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City to support our wide variety of small businesses during this holiday week,” Public Works Director Richard Mulledy, who also oversees the city’s parking enterprise, said in a news release Monday.
Colorado Springs officials worked with stakeholders in Old Colorado City and the Downtown Partnership to offer the parking promotions, Mulledy added.
The city will place hoods over free meters in downtown, including on Tejon Street from Cache La Poudre to Rio Grande streets and the associated side streets within one block of Tejon.
City-owned parking garages at Nevada and Colorado avenues, Nevada Avenue and Kiowa Street, and Cascade Avenue and Bijou Street; all parking meters in Old Colorado City; and surface lots on West Cucharras Street, West Pikes Peak Avenue and the alley lot off of West Colorado Avenue will be free.
Later this season, metered parking in Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City will be free on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, according to the city’s parking enterprise website.
More than 90% of downtown’s 170-plus shops, galleries, restaurants and personal services storefronts are locally owned and operated.
“There’s a real joy to having facetime with the people who have poured their heart and soul — and life — into bringing you an independent business and hand-selected products,” Downtown Partnership spokeswoman Carrie Simison said in a separate Monday news release. “Each item you choose to gift comes with a story when you purchase it from a local shop owner.”

Colorado Springs shoppers can pick up a downtown holiday coupon book at Mountain Chalet outdoor sports store on Nevada Avenue and the Terra Verde boutique on Tejon Street.
Small Business Saturday festivities also include Christmas carols and the return of the Yobel and The Look Up Gallery as a holiday pop-up shop at 517 S. Cascade Ave., Suite E. It runs Saturday through Jan. 15, ahead of a planned grand reopening in the spring.

On Nov. 15, the city implemented free Sunday parking in three city-owned garages and nine lots through the end of the calendar year. Officials also permanently shortened meter hours: from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 to 8 p.m. on Sundays.

An out-of-state company that provides support to defense and civilian government agencies across the globe has acquired a veteran-owned defense support services firm in Colorado Springs.
Delta Solutions & Strategies, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Colorado Springs, was acquired Friday by Ukpeaġvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC), an Alaska Native Corporation, in UIC’s largest acquisition to date. Delta joins UIC as part of the Springfield, Va.-based Bowhead Family of Companies within the UIC Government Services federal contracting division, according to a Monday news release.
Details of the deal were not disclosed, but Delta President and CEO Mark Stafford said Monday that Bowhead acquired 70% of the company. Stafford retains the remaining 30%.
Stafford characterized the integration as “extremely positive” for both entities.
“UIC Bowhead has been a partner with us for over 10 years, so we knew our cultures worked together. We have a great relationship between the two companies, a deep respect, and our core values are the same. That made the acquisition much easier,” he said.
Bowhead has 3,000 employees and 300 contracts, with 16 offices across the U.S., the release said. This includes a Colorado Springs office on Inverness Drive. It offers services in systems and information technology, logistics and marine, engineering and program management, manufacturing and products, and advanced technology.
Delta Solutions & Strategies has 400 employees across its locations in 27 states as well as Korea, Japan and Germany, with close to 200 employees along Colorado’s Front Range, Stafford said. Delta, which is a prime contractor for Colorado Springs-based U.S. Space Command, creates military training products, provides operations and maintenance, modeling and simulations, and professional and technical advisory and assistance services for the Department of Defense. Its 175 subcontractors support 46 federal contracts.
UIC Chief Operating Officer Jeevan Pokharel spearheaded Delta’s acquisition to “enhance and expand Bowhead’s service offerings for the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Space Force and U.S. Space Command,” the news release said.
Acquiring Delta will provide Bowhead “with new capabilities and exceptional service offerings” to complement its existing services, and is expected to help Bowhead secure more government contracts, according to the release. The integration provides Delta access to more Department of Defense federal contracts, enhanced expertise and services, and access to funding and business resources to help it grow and strengthen operations.
“This acquisition strengthens our ability to deliver cutting-edge solutions to the Department of Defense and other key government agencies. By leveraging Delta’s specialized expertise, we are positioned to offer an even broader range of services, helping our clients address the ever-evolving challenges in defense and national security,” Dr. Pearl K. Brower, UIC President and CEO, said in the release.
Delta will undergo a name change to Delta Solutions & Strategies — Bowhead, but its headquarters will stay in Colorado Springs and there will be no change in personnel, Stafford said.
Its senior leadership team will also remain in place. Stafford remains as president and CEO for the next five years, and others — Chief Financial Officer Debbie Leach, Chief Operating Officer Scott Anible and Vice President of Business Development Bob Veazey — for “at least three years,” he said.
After that?
“We’re going to keep growing the business together as partners. Hopefully, we keep growing at the same rate we have been. I only anticipate success going forward,” Stafford said.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Black Friday marks the start of holiday shopping season, and Colorado Springs business owners are hoping shoppers will keep their money in their community.
Cronk Art and Curiosities in Downtown Colorado Springs participated in Black Friday and plan to offer deals on Small Business Saturday, as well.
“We decided that, like, we’re not going to do a difference between Black Friday and Small Business Saturday,” said Chris Dantzler, one of the co-owners of Cronk Art and Curiosities. “It’s our small business time, it’s our time to bring people in.”
Dantzler and Andrew Cronk both said they plan to offer the community the best deals they can to get people in the door, not only for their business’ sake, but also for the sake of the local economy and community as a whole.
“Shopping local is just one of the ways to keep things locally in the community and making sure that we are supporting each other,” Dantzler said.
“The more you shop local, the more you’re supporting your friends, families and neighbors,” Cronk added.
Much of the money made from selling items made by local artists goes back to the artists, they both said. That money also goes directly to the employees of the business.
“Because not only are you just helping the local community, you’re helping our staff, you’re making sure that they stay employed and everything, and they’re able to buy their presents for their families as well,” Dantzler said.
Nearby, Alexa Franck, one of the new owners of Savory Spice Colorado Springs, ran a Black Friday deal, as well, with her sign outside advertising “Spend $100, Get $100.” But for her, the main draw of the store is the appeal of supporting the local economy and providing the community with the best experience she personally can give.
“All of our spices are ground right up in Denver, so it’s as fresh as you’re going to get, better than online,” Franck said. “You’re going to get things like snacks and cute decorations, and an experience you’re not going to get online.”
Franck said businesses like hers are very community-focused, giving a more personal touch and benefiting the customer as much as the customer’s local purchase benefits the community.
“You’re supporting us and helping us stay in business. This time of year is our biggest time of year and we love to be able to serve our community,” Franck said. “We’re all here to help you, help you find exactly what you need and help you find things that you maybe didn’t know you needed, and we love when people come downtown.”

The action of the play is about those journeys and the journey back from them.”
When people hear the name Jane Austen, and this novel in particular, many immediately think it’s a story about romantic love. But that’s not the case, says Lowan, who’s directing her last show as artistic director of Theatreworks. She accepted a position as artistic director of the Ten Thousand Things theater company in Minneapolis, Minn., and will start in February.

“The true love of Jane’s life was her sister, Cassandra,” Lowans said. “This story is focused on the love the two sisters have for each other. The loving journey of this play — sure, there’s romantic love — but really it’s about how the sisters misunderstand each other, grow apart, and grow back together more deeply over the course of the play.”
Austen had a wicked sense of humor, Lowans says, and Hamill’s adaptation preserves that humor through her script featuring seven actors: Elinor and Marianne and five others who take on multiple roles throughout the show, including those of love interests, close family, town gossips and even horses. For example, Colton Pratt, who recently starred as King Henry in Theatreworks’ “Henry IV & V,” will play both love interests of the sisters: awkward Edward and the overly charming Willoughby. There’s also one character, a nosy neighbor, who is played by all five actors at some point.

“She’s got a very recognizable costume and thanks to the brilliance of the actors they’ve created a character that is very delicious,” Lowans said. “Getting to watch five different artists interpret her has been one of the biggest treats of the rehearsal room.”
Though Austen’s novels and Hamill’s play have a strong dose of humor, they also aren’t afraid to be deeply human. It’s impossible to call the play strictly a comedy or a drama.
“The thing about real life and Austen is that it’s both,” Lowans said. “Real hard things happen in the play and those hard things slam up against the silliest moments. That’s what this play does. Moments of deeply silly comedy and also a family struggling with loss and sisters unsure of whether they’ll get to be with the people they love. We oscillate back and forth between those two things that feels very true to how life works.”
